How AI card grading works: from phone photo to a grade in two minutes

  1. 01 · about 30 seconds

    Snap both sides

Out of the sleeve, even light, dark background.

  2. 02 · under 2 minutes

    We measure it

Centering in pixels, then every corner, edge and the surface.

  3. 03 · saved instantly

    You decide

A TCGAI Score and four sub-grades, kept as a certificate.

What the AI grader looks at on every card

The four things a grader checks, measured the same way on every card.

  1. Centering L/R · T/B

Front and back ratios measured in pixels, against the published centering limits: 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the back for a 10.

  2. Corners 8 tips

Whitening, softness and dings on each of the eight corner tips, judged individually.

  3. Edges 8 edges

Chipping, roughness and silvering along every edge, before and after.

  4. Surface 2 faces

Micro-scratches, print lines and holo damage, including defects the eye skips at arm’s length.

What to do with your score

Our guide for each band. The value of the card settles the close calls.

  1. 9.5 – 10 Gem mint Submit A real shot at the top grade. The fee pays back.
  2. 9 Mint Consider Send it if a 9 is still worth more than the fee.
  3. 8 – 8.5 Near mint-mint Hold Often worth as much raw. Keep it or sell it raw.
  4. Below 8 Near mint or lower Keep raw Grading costs more than it adds.

Questions collectors ask

The TCGAI Score is an AI estimate, not an official grade. We are not affiliated with any grading company.

How accurate is the AI at producing the TCGAI Score?

Our computer vision analyses the four key sub-grades: centering, corners, edges and surface. Centering is measured from the borders and defects are scored by published rules (see our methodology), which is what lets you filter out cards that will not reach gem mint before paying a submission fee. Every result comes with a confidence range. The TCGAI Score is an AI estimate, not an official grade, and third-party grades may differ.

Which cards and games do you support?

Sports cards (NBA, NFL, MLB, soccer: Topps, Panini, Upper Deck, Bowman) and trading card games (Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, One Piece, Dragon Ball Super, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Disney Lorcana, Weiss Schwarz, Digimon, Riftbound and other TCGs; games without a catalog of their own are identified by web search). Standard-size cards (2.5 × 3.5 inch), Yu-Gi-Oh! and other Japanese-size cards (59 × 86 mm) and vintage sizes such as 1933 Goudey, 1953-55 Bowman, T206 and tall boys are measured at their own proportions.

How do I take the best photo for grading?

Take the card out of the sleeve, because glare confuses edge detection. Use a dark background, keep the lighting even, centre the card in the frame and upload both the front and the back.

Why use AI before sending a card to a grading service?

Third-party grading costs between $20 and $150 per card. If you submit hoping for a 10 and get a 7, you lose the fee and the postage. Pre-grading is a filter: you only pay for the cards that have a real chance at a top grade.

How long does it take?

Under two minutes per card, against 45 to 90 days for an economy submission. That is fast enough to decide on a purchase or a sale while you are still at the table.

What kind of defects can it detect?

Surface: micro-scratches, print lines and stains. Corners: whitening and soft tips. Centering: exact ratios such as 60/40 or 50/50. Edges: chipping and roughness.

Can I scan cards that are already in a slab?

Yes. Many collectors scan their 8s and 9s. If the estimate comes back higher than the slab, regrading may be worth the fee and the wait.

Is my data private?

Photos are processed on our server and by the AI provider that runs the analysis, only to produce your result. They are never sold. You can keep a certificate private or make it public. Details in our privacy policy.

Why trust a model over a human grader?

A human grader is consistent most of the time. A model applies the same thresholds to every card, every time, and shows you the sub-scores behind the number so you can see where the card lost points.

Is there a free tier?

Yes. Every account gets two scans a month, no card required. It is enough to test the accuracy on your own collection before subscribing.
