What the AI checks on Magic: The Gathering cards
What matters on Magic cards: foil surfaces, retro frame borders and vintage Alpha/Beta printing variations.
-
Centering L/R · T/B
Front and back ratios measured precisely. Off-centre past 65/35 caps the card at a 9 before anyone looks at the corners.
-
Corners 8 tips
Sharpness, whitening, dings. One soft tip is usually the whole difference between a 9 and a 10.
-
Edges 8 edges
Edge wear, chipping, roughness. Chipping hides in the border. It is the most common reason a clean card comes back a 9.
-
Surface 2 faces
Foil clouding, scratches, print lines. Print lines and holo scratches are invisible in a phone photo and fatal to gem mint.
Centering on MTG cards
Measures the exact pixel distance between borders: a 10 needs 55/45 or better on the front and 75/25 on the back (a 60/40 front gives a 9). Alpha and Beta cards are often off-centre, so check this first.
Foil and surface detection
Finds foil clouding, micro-scratches and print lines that are easy to miss by eye. Essential for foil Mythic Rares, Secret Lair and Commander Masters cards.
Corner and edge wear
Detects corner whitening, edge softening and chipping, and flags even the minor imperfections that would cost a sub-grade point.

Grade a card freeHow accurate is the AI for Magic: The Gathering cards?
Our AI checks the same observable criteria professional graders look at on MTG cards (centering, corners, edges and surface) and produces a TCGAI Score with sub-grade detail. The TCGAI Score is an AI estimate, not an official grade. Third-party grades may differ. We are not affiliated with any third-party grading company.
Does it work on vintage Alpha and Beta MTG cards?
Yes. Cards from Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Revised and the Reserved List are checked on the same four sub-grades as modern ones. Off-centre vintage printing is measured from the borders, and wear on old card stock shows up in the corner and edge sub-grades.
Can it detect foil clouding on MTG cards?
Yes. The surface engine targets foil surfaces: clouding, micro-scratches, orange peel texture and print lines, which are common on foil MTG cards and hard to spot.
Should I send my Reserved List card for grading?
Check it with the AI first. Reserved List cards like Dual Lands can be worth thousands graded, and a TCGAI Score helps you decide whether a $50 to $250 grading fee is worth the risk. The TCGAI Score is an estimate; the actual grade may differ.
How do I photograph foil MTG cards?
Remove the sleeve, use a dark background and diffused lighting (direct light causes foil glare), and shoot at a slight angle to reduce reflections.
