Market outlook
Stable Outlook 6/10
Raw prices low at $3.82 with high volume, graded 10 holding $76 due to scarcity (133 pop), but no explosive growth post-bug fix and multiple prints.
Next months. Stable with graded 10 around $70-80, raw under $5 due to steady supply.
Long term. Declining relative value as set ages and newer Mega sets release, potential niche collector demand for Full Art.
History
Mega Gengar is the Mega Evolved form of Gengar, a Ghost/Poison-type Pokémon from Generation I, known for its mischievous and ghostly nature, originating as a final evolution of Gastly through Haunter. This card depicts it as a powerful Darkness-type Stage 2 Mega Evolution Pokémon ex with 350 HP, featuring the ability Shadowy Concealment that reduces Prize cards taken by 1 when a Pokémon is Knocked Out by opponent's Pokémon ex damage, and attack Void Gale dealing 230 damage while moving Energy.[1]
First released in the Japanese MEGA Starter Set Mega Gengar ex as part of the Phantasmal Flames expansion, with English release in Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution—Phantasmal Flames in 2025.[1]
- Initially buggy in Pokémon Trading Card Game Live on October 23, 2025, where Shadowy Concealment stacked and worked on non-attack KOs like poison; fixed October 25, 2025.[1]
- Considered 'broken' in early competitive play due to bug, leading to deck dominance and ban speculation.[3]
- Features artwork by 5ban Graphics in starter print, Taiga Kasai for Mega attack rare, and danciao for special illustration rare.[1]

Collector notes
Condition. Check for centering issues on Full Art variant, edge wear from high HP text and ability box, surface scratches on holographic foil, print lines on black background; common flaws include whitening on borders and holo bleeding.
Storage. Use semi-rigid or top-loader sleeves in cool, dry environment away from sunlight to prevent foil oxidation; avoid stacking without dividers for Full Art cards.
Authenticity. Verify holo pattern matches official Phantasmal Flames Double Rare Full Art; check card number 056/094 and set symbol; fakes often have blurry text, incorrect font on 'Mega Evolution ex rule', or mismatched energy costs; use blacklight for genuine Pokémon foil glow.
